| President's Corner - June 2025
It's now about a week before Field Day 2025 at our Ensor Park and Museum site. This is primarily a social event, and I encourage everyone to come visit with your fellow club members, enjoying all of the activities that will be taking place. Everyone is welcome, for whatever time you have, to help set up, operate, or simply stop by to observe and provide encouragement and cheers. This is a time when amateur radio comes together to highlight our many roles in emergency response capabilities for the general public. This is a great opportunity to learn about and see the new digital modes in action, as well as antennas many of us only dream of having at home. We aim to have easy-access stations to operate on the porch, under pop-up canopies, or in the air-conditioned trailer, all surrounded by lawn chairs and good conversation. | Author | G McCarville (WBØCNK) | | Publishing date | Wednesday, 18 June 2025 |
| Meeting Notes - June 2025

MEETING TO ORDER:
President George, WBØCNK, called the meeting to order shortly after 8:00 AM CST on June 14, 2025. Attendees introduced themselves with name and call sign. There were a total of 28 members present, 21 members attending in person and 7 joining via Zoom. George recognized new member Tim Wiegman WBØYQN.
SECRETARY REPORT:
Marty gave the secretary's report for Jason. The club currently has 68 members. The recent POTA activation at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve was a very successful event, and the club is looking forward to ARRL Field Day 2025.
TREASURER REPORT:
Marty KEØPEZ reported the bank balance and the amounts in the repeater reserve fund and the general fund. He provided details on club expenses, money collected, and the recurring expenses that will be coming due in the near future.
AGENDA ITEMS:
ARRL FIELD DAY PLANNING COMMITTEE: [LARRY-KDØRIU, JIM-KØNK ]
Jim KØNK and Larry KDØRIU will coordinate the SFTARC ARRL Field Day event. The club will operate 3A, including SSB, digital, CW, a GOTA station, a 6M station, and a solar powered station. Jason KFØISL will operate an FT8 station in the trailer; Jeff KSØJD will provide an additional radio. Many antennas are available, an R5 vertical has replaced the R7 vertical, which has been retired. Tom WA2IVD will provide the 6M beam. This club emphasizes camaraderie rather than competition. The club's early setup will begin on Friday morning at 7:30 AM and finish up on Saturday morning. Tom and Larry have improved the trailer tower. Jeff will supply hot dogs for Saturday noon. The evening meal will be a pot luck with several rotisserie chickens. Sunday breakfast will be provided by Jim, and there will be pizza for Sunday lunch.
Larry has uploaded a preliminary equipment list to the club Google Drive. Greg KIØKK will coordinate logging and provide checklists of proper logging procedure. Trig will help with the information exchange with ARRL. Any member that sends a Winlink message, copies the ARRL FD CW message, or engages in any other activity that will earn points for this contest, please contact Jim.
There was a motion to donate $75 to support the N3FPJ logging software. The motion was seconded. After a short discussion, the motion passed unanimously.
ENSOR COOKOUT TO CELEBRATE and REMEMBER JOE KROUT
There will be a cookout at the Ensor Park and Museum on June 14th to remember and honor Joe Krout (KRØUT), who passed away on December 7, 2024. He donated his large collection of ham gear to the Olathe Ensor Foundation, and many of these items will be on display at the museum all day on the 14th. Area hams have been asked to take home with them any of the items that they might find useful and to make a small donation to help support the museum.
REPEATER UPDATE [JIM - KØNK]
Jim reported several of the issues that affect the ongoing quest of the club to get our repeaters back on the air. Danny KAØFMZ put the 442 MHz repeater back on the air, but it had a hum and is now in for repair. The 147.24 MHz repeater is on the air in DeSoto.
TECH NIGHT PROGRAM TO BE HELD ON JUNE 26
Review of set-up, activities, and procedures pertaining to ARRL Field Day.
ENSORFEST25 HIGHLIGHTS
Marty and Howard summarized the music, displays, tours, and activities of Ensorfest '25
TALLGRASS PRAIRIE NATIONAL PRESERVE POTA EVENT ON MAY 17 [JIM KØNK]
A total of 14 club members joined together to set up and operate 3 stations. Propagation was not good, but 58 SSB/CW contacts were made on 20M and 30M. The group was delayed in Beto Junction because the restaurant was inadequately prepared for a large group. Jim spent a lot of time combining logs; he recommends; a different process next year.
THANK YOU TO CLUB MEMBERS AND OTHER AREA HAMS FOR PROVIDING PUBLIC SERVICE
Area hams and SFTARC club members provide much public service through ECS County Storm Spotters, ARES, SATERN, and various public service events and activities. From SFTARC, we recognize Woody Jeffrey, Howard Cripe, Steve Rainey, Ray Erlichman, Jim Andera, George McCarville, Tom Apalenek, Tim Weigman, and Greg Sippel. Other area hams that we recognize are Mike Ralls, Herb Fiddick, and Diana Fiddick.
MEMBERS WHO WOULD ENJOY VISITORS AND/OR CARDS
Mike Lane is at Good Samaritan Society, Olathe. The address is 20705 W 151st St, Olathe.
OTHER BUSINESS:
Volunteers are needed to help staff the Ensor Park and Museum for the rest of June. Please see Howard to sign up. Volunteers will get one raffle ticket for each day they volunteer. The raffle prize is $100.
There are two website needs. The ARRL Field Day schedule needs to be uploaded. Greg will be assessing some web hosting options and deciding which one is best before the 3-year contract renews in 2026. Marty will prepare an application to secure 501(c)(3) tax status for the club so that we will be eligible for low cost web services through Microsoft.
Danny Lane, KAØFMZ, one of the SFTARC repeater trustees, sent a greeting and said he hoped to be able to attend a breakfast meeting soon.
ADJOURN:
There was a motion to adjourn. It passed unanimously. President George adjourned the meeting shortly after 9 AM.

| Field Day 2025
The Santa Fe Amateur Radio Club from Olathe will be hosting the 2025 ARRL Field Day event at Ensor Park and Museum located at 18995 W 183rd St, Olathe, KS 66062. The park is where the Marshall Ensor homestead was located during his life and while he was a teacher at Olathe High School, now Olathe North High School.
The ARRL Field Day event will be on June 28 and June 29, 2025. The operators will begin making contacts on Saturday at 1pm, June 28 and will operate until Sunday at 1pm, June 29.
The object of Field Day is to work as many stations as possible on the 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 Meter HF bands, as well as 6m band, and in doing so to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. A premium is placed on developing skills to meet the challenges of emergency preparedness as well as to acquaint the general public with the capabilities of Amateur Radio.
Larry Hall KDØRIU and Jim Andera KØNK will be organizing the club FD event this year. Please consider helping us get the antennas and equipment set up on Friday and Saturday mornings and operating for a time this year on Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening and Sunday until 1pm.
The public is invited to visit the park and see the radio operators make contacts in North America and also foreign countries which are called DX stations.
See the Club Calendar for for additional details. | Author | G Wolfe (KIØKK) | | Publishing date | Wednesday, 23 April 2025 |
| A Pleasant Day at the Tallgrass Some of the team had to leave early, but those who remained to the end got in on a group picture in front of a sod roof building. Jeff is behind the camera.
With a light north wind and mostly clear skies, the SFTARC’s annual mini-DXpidtion to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve was among the most pleasant we have ever had. Not only was the weather pleasant, but we had the most SFTARC participants ever. A total of 14 club members participated in this May 17th event! For several participants, this was their first Parks-on-the-Air event from the Tallgrass (POTA designator US-3673).
Starting early on Saturday morning, about eight cars departed Gardner at 6:00 am to form a convoy down I-35 to Emporia, then west to eventually arrive at the Tallgrass just north of Strong City, KS. Other members met the convoy at the Tallgrass or at a breakfast stop.
Breakfast at BETO Junction was good--but a bit slow.
Breakfast at BETO Junction took a bit longer than expected. As a result, we were not on the air at 10 am as we had planned; our first contact was logged at 15:53Z. While we fought poor propagation conditions we enjoyed really pleasant weather. Setting up three HF stations just north of the three-story limestone barn, we operated under the shade of two ramps that lead to the upper story of the limestone barn. To be able to look out over the prairie as we operated, really enhanced the experience.
With the green prairie in the background, Trig operates the 20m station into the Cushcraft R5 vertical antenna, while Ben logs and Greg observes.
Taking advantage of the shade of the barn's ramp, the CW station worked mostly 30m using a dipole antenna.
Operators rotated in and out of the various operating and logging positions. Three laptops supported logging with N3FJP AC-Log software; Icom radios were prevalent. An IC-706 provided for phone operation on 20m gathering 32 QSO. On 40m, operators of the IC-7300 station struggled with propagation, making just 1 or 2 QSOs. An IC-746 brought in 24 QSOs on 30m and 1 on 17m. The ionosphere simply did not allow the higher bands to work. A mix of vertical antennas and an end-fed 40m HW antenna along with a 30m dipole served as our antenna farm. The final log showed 58 contacts, several being POTA Park-2-Park.
For lunch, we had more pizza delivered than the 14 participants could eat. Our time at the Tallgrass is considered volunteer hours by the National Park Service and we entered our service hours in the park’s Volunteer Log. As always, we were welcomed and appreciated by Ranger Heather.
The convoy stopped at Braum’s in Emporia for a bit of ice cream on the way home. You might call that stop “Icing on the cake,” topping off a very pleasant day.
Those SFTARC members that participated in 2025 were, Mike Stewart, Trig Morley, Larry Hall, George McCarville, Greg Wolfe, Ben Rocke, Robert Orr, Jason Gaumer, Rex Gaumer, Bob Davidson, Jeff Darby, Zach Brittan, Tom Brittan and Jim Andera.

| Extra Effort for "ENSOR"
If any of you remember that sorry-looking wooden sign that simply said ENSOR (well, sort of) that had somehow made its way into the pioneer cabin at Ensor Park and Museum in Olathe from who knows where, I am pleased to report that it has been given a new lease on life by a member of the Johnson County Radio Amateurs Club, John Capra, KDØEVM.
Sometime in May, May being a month during which members of JCRAC are supposed to serve as tour guides for Ensor Park and Museum, John took it upon himself to lovingly repair the suitable-for-a-desk sign, which was missing most of the letter "E" and had an "R" with a broken leg. Apparently displaying a fair amount of patience - master woodworker Marshall Ensor, W9BSP would have been proud of him - John ably rebuilt the "E" and reconnected the angled leg of the "R" to the rest of the letter - Marshall would have been doubly proud of him - to basically make the sturdy old sign "as good as new," as they say. Then he applied a new coat of gold paint to the whole thing to really make it shine!
Throughout June, June being a month during which members of our club are expected to lead tours at Ensor Park and Museum, visitors to the 40-acre historic site along 183rd Street will encounter the refurbished sign in the north room of the peg barn, where it sits atop a display case for model cars. Easily overlooked perhaps, the sign may lack the overall appeal to the eye of the 1937 electronic scoreboard Marshall constructed for the gym at Olathe High School or Bill McCabe's yoke for oxen that dates back to 1875, but it's a great addition to the room, that's for sure.
